History of the Honda Accord in North America

Honda released its 2017 Accord late this summer, and, unsurprisingly, it hit many Top 10 lists. The popular mid-sized sedan celebrates a milestone this year. It’s been 40 years since the first model rolled off a Japanese assembly line in 1976. Five years would pass before the Japanese auto company would build its first Accord on U.S. soil. Because of the anniversary, we’ve decided to take a visual road trip down memory lane to illustrate the evolution of a car that’s become one of the most beloved vehicles in North America.

ACTS of Kindness: Hendrick Honda’s Week of Service

The good folks at ACTION in Community Through Service are certainly doing their part to embody the idea “charity begins at home” by serving the Greater Prince William area.  Founded in 1969, ACTS is a private nonprofit with campaigns aimed at alleviating hunger, homelessness and interpersonal violence. But ACTS is a hand up more than a hand out. Their overall goal is returning self-sufficiency and dignity to those in need.

Located in Dumfries, ACTS has many dedicated volunteers and sponsors, including Hendrick Honda Woodbridge, whose Team Honda Week of Service kicks off this week.

Running from June 10-19, the Team Honda Week of Service involves more than 15,000 Honda associates, dealers and suppliers throughout North America who volunteer to communities where they live and work. For Hendrick Honda Woodbridge, this service involves sponsoring a food drive initiative for ACT.

Hunger Facts

Running a successful food drive actually involves much more than pulling unwanted canned goods from donors’ cupboards.

Bryana Shevlin, ACTS Food Pantry Manager, explains the end goal for food drives is to provide nutritious meals. Donated foods often end up in the hands of the young, elderly, or those with specific medical issues like diabetes. Therefore, nutritional considerations and food facts are important when donating the most needed items:

  • Breakfast items-cereal, oatmeal, grits, etc.
  • Canned or dry beans
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned meats (tuna, chicken)
  • Whole-grain pasta
  • Canned tomato sauce
  • Brown rice
  • Milk
  • Cooking oil
  • Canned soup
  • Coffee

Here are some guidelines to follow when selecting food for your next donation.

  • Limit foods high in fat and sugar. Consider donating foods high in fiber and low in added sugars, such as fruit packed in 100 percent juice rather than syrup or cereal with less than 6 grams of sugar per serving.
  • Low sodium is a must. Packaged foods are often high in sodium. Look for foods labeled “low sodium,” “reduced sodium” or “no added salt”.
  • Whole grains. Look for brown rice and other whole-grain products. By consuming whole-grain foods, families get more fiber and vitamins with each bite.

Salt

“While 15 percent of Americans are currently going hungry, 40 percent of the food we produce is thrown away even though it’s safe to consume,” Shevlin explains. “Waste is one area where food pantries can step in to help. They can partner with nearby grocery stores, farmers, and restaurants who donate food that would otherwise end up in the landfill.” Of course, there’s always the evergreen donation option: cold, hard cash.

Warning: Donating may be contagious

Shevlin has seen many families and individuals helped through donation drives. One client who sticks out for her was a young woman who made her first visit to the ACTS food pantry and was surprised by the amount of giving.

“As we pushed out her cart of groceries, she had a look of shock on her face and started to cry,” Shevlin said. “She shared that she had absolutely no more food left in her house. She had no idea how she was going to feed herself and her children and decided to search online, where she found out about ACTS. She was only expecting to receive a few bags of food and could not believe all of the food we had in the cart was for her.  After she got her groceries, she expressed her gratitude and desire to volunteer.”

20 answers to common questions from car buyers

20 Answers for Car Buyers

I remember going in to buy a car with my Dad when I was about ten years old. The salesman and my father had a long discussion about the merits of the car, they sat around a desk, my father asked a slew of questions.

There was a lot of squirming by that car salesman, not because he wasn’t sure what he was doing, but because my Dad made sure to grill him on everything he could think of when it came to that car. It was a four-door sedan and after an hour or so we went home in that car.

Why shouldn’t you have questions about a new car? It’s an important purchase. The internet may make it seem really simple, but buying a car can be confusing. You shouldn’t be hesitant to ask any questions you have before getting your next car.

Here are 20 of the most frequently asked questions from car buyers.

What are the terms of the lease or loan?

At Hendrick Honda of Woodbridge we provide this information in writing for all sales, whether for a new or used car. Make sure to read the terms of sale carefully, and our sales staff will be glad to go over it in detail. You should be sure that the length and terms of the deal fit your financial situation.

What is my current car worth as a trade-in?

Many buyers roll onto the lot with a used car that they’ve outgrown and they wish to trade it in. If you have value in your current vehicle, the salesperson should tell you and put it in writing. Make sure you know precisely how the trade-in will work and what you’ll owe on the other side.

What is the current interest rate and what are the trends in interest rates?

At Hendrick Honda we have a financing center in the dealership that works with most institutions in the area. Our experts can help you get the most current best interest rate and also explain what to expect in the future as best we can.

How long has this particular car been on the lot?

In most cases, new cars have been on the lot for a short period and are very low mileage, basically brand spanking new. In the case of used cars we’ll always be happy to tell you how long a car has been on the lot.

Are the new models coming out soon?

We recognize that the automobile manufacturing might be confusing. Here’s the basic rule: new Honda models start shipping in the late summer and early fall. Sometimes, a new model may appear in the spring. Our staff can help you out by telling you what models are current, when they came out, and when the new models are expected to arrive on the market. In some cases you may get a good deal on the current model or last year’s model as the cycle turns over. New models may have new features, so be sure to consult with one of sales people.

If the dealership doesn’t have a repair center, where are the nearest authorized repair and maintenance centers?

At Hendrick Honda Woodbridge in Woodbridge, Virginia, we have a full service center which is open seven days a week for your convenience. We’re committed to making sure our customers have a high quality, convenient service and repair center in their own community. Our service center is staffed by ASE, AAA-approved certified mechanics.

What are the “other fees” I am responsible for paying?

We provide “haggle-free pricing” which means you aren’t surprised by anything unusual or in fine-print. You don’t have to worry about trying to squeeze out a special price from our sales staff because our best price is given to everyone, every day.

What other cars can you show me that are in my price range and offer the features I’m looking for?

Any time you buy a car (or any item with a significant purchase price for that matter) make sure to get as many options as possible. Our staff is committed to showing you multiple options for your unique situation.

Can I get the car in a different color?

In most cases we will have new Honda models in all of the popular colors right off the assembly line. But if you have a specific request, we would be happy to accommodate you when we can.

If I special order a car, how long will it take to arrive?

That depends on what time of year and what the make and model of the car is. But in most cases we get you your new car very quickly. Contact us to find out more.

How do I ensure that I can get the best gas mileage for this car?

There are several ways to get the “sticker gas mileage” that you see on the window of the car.

  • Drive sensibly: stick close to the speed limit, avoid rapid acceleration and braking, and use cruise control.
  • Keep your car in good condition: a car that is in-tune and has proper maintenance can increase fuel efficiency by as much as 8%, according to a federal study. Bring your car in regularly for a tune up, maintain the engine, and get any damages repaired promptly.
  • Avoid rush hour traffic by staggering or planning your trips to and from work, school, or elsewhere. The less you “idle in traffic” the less fuel you’ll waste.

Do you help with getting plates?

When you buy a new vehicle from Hendrick Honda you can get assistance in acquiring your new plates, tags, and anything else needed to make your car road-ready. We can also help you if you’re buying a used car. We can even roll those fees into your purchase price.

Does a “zero-interest loan” really have zero interest?

Yes, there are zero-interest loans available for some car buyers. Our financing center can help you learn about these plans if they apply.
In addition, if you’ve had a difficult time getting a car loan, our finance professionals might be able to help you. They specialize in bad credit loans.

Are there any new features I can add to this car?

Most of our new cars have upgrade packages available. These include satellite radio, power packages, assisted parking and on-board cameras, keyless entry, remote trunk release, and more.

Is there a special deal OR What is your best price?

This is a great question to ask when buying a new or used car. At Hendrick Honda we offer “haggle-free pricing” which means you get our best deal every day.

How did the dealership acquire this car?

Our new cars are obtained directly from the manufacturer, but we always make sure to offer every detail on our used inventory. In most cases we acquire used cars via auctions.

Can I have a mechanic look at the car?

Of course you may have a mechanic inspect a car from our used lot. We also have detailed history of each car we offer in our used car inventory.

What does the warranty cover?

If you’re buying a new car from a dealer you’ll get some sort of warranty. You can read about our Lifetime Warranty to find out more. Many of our used vehicles will also carry a warranty of some kind as well. Our sales staff will explain that to you so you can weigh your options.

Can I sleep on it?

If you’re standing on the lot or sitting in the drivers’ seat and you’re not absolutely sure about making the purchase right then, take a breath, go home and sleep on it.

What is the final cost of the vehicle?

You should know how much you’re going to pay, right? Make sure to get exactly what the final cost is in writing. As part of our commitment to integrity, our sales staff and financing center staff will always give you a final price. We want to do business the right way, and that means complete transparency.

8 Myths About Hybrid Cars

Grey 2014 Honda Civic Hybrid Sedan for Hendrick Honda Woodbridge blog post

The 2014 Honda Civic Hybrid Sedan

Myth #1: Hybrid cars are difficult to drive

You drive a hybrid car just like any gas-engine car you’ve ever driven, there’s nothing new to learn. The hybrid car monitors the car and determines the most efficient use of your gas and electric engines. It all happens seamlessly underneath you.

Myth #2: I’ll have to pay more for a Hybrid car

Hybrids are being offered in a range of sizes and more are being released every year, reducing the production costs. The Honda Civic Hybrid starts under $25,000, and the money you save on gas consumption (as much as 8-10%), can reduce your overall investment significantly in the first year. The purchase of a hybrid is a long-range view of your personal transportation needs and costs.

Myth #3: Hybrid cars break down more frequently and cost more to repair

Take a look around the next time you’re driving — you’re sharing the road with more hybrids than you probably realize. According to one report, more than 90% of all hybrids sold 14 years ago are still on the road. The hybrid is a reliable car, and their owners love them.

Most dealers who sell hybrid vehicles offer special warranty plans which cover the electric motor and the battery pack. Any increased cost in fixing an item is more than offset by the savings in gas consumption (often as much as 10% savings for many drivers of a hybrid).

Myth #4: Hybrid cars have to be plugged in

That’s electric cars…hybrids are a combination of a gas-fueled engine and an electrical engine. The electrical engine hops in and takes over when the sensors in the car recognize that it would be more efficient to use that power source. Power is stored in the electric battery from the “leftover” power that is normally wasted by the gas-engine when you are braking and driving in different types of traffic. No wires needed!

Myth #5: Honda has ceased production of the Civic Hybrid

On a Facebook Group page for Honda Civic Hybrid owners, one follower posted “I thought they stopped making the Honda Civic Hybrid in 2010.” Not true, and Honda is in the hybrid market for the long-haul.

A representative from Honda North America stated: “Honda is committed to electrified vehicle technology, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electrics and fuel cell-electric vehicles. Our path forward includes a robust lineup of these technologies.”

Myth #6: Hybrid cars are not “manly”

That depends on what you think “manly” is. If paying more in gas expenses, and sending more toxic emissions into our air is “manly,” then I suppose so. But if you think being “manly” is driving a car that handles just as well as a gas-guzzling automobile and saves you money (which you could use on “manly” pursuits like hunting, extreme sports, and cigars) then you’ll be plenty manly enough.

Men are buying hybrid cars. According to separate research from Strategic Vision, Polk Insight, and J.D. Power, men make up 60-61% of the hybrid ownership population.

Myth #7: Hybrid cars are not safe

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the safety ratings for Honda hybrid models as well as the hybrids of our competitors are comparable or better than gas-engine automobiles of the same size.

Myth #8: Hybrid cars are not powerful automobiles

The Honda Civic Hybrid Sedan is a full-sized sedan and when you’re sitting in it, you don’t feel like it’s underpowered at all. The Two-Motor Hybrid System, available on the EPA-rated 50 mpg Accord Hybrid and the EPA-rated 115 MPGe Accord Plug-in Hybrid, seamlessly blends electric-only, hybrid and engine drive modes along with powerful regenerative braking to provide responsive and efficient performance in a wide range of driving situations. As the powertrain shifts seamlessly among the three driving modes, the system utilizes power from the i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine and the electric motor to suit the driving conditions moment to moment.

“Honda’s hybrid technology has progressed substantially since the introduction of the Insight in 1999,” says Art St. Cyr, vice president of Product Planning and Logistics at American Honda.  “Today, the Honda two-motor hybrid system that powers the Accord Hybrid is the direct result of our commitment to create advanced vehicle technologies that offer top-of-class fuel economy ratings with a fun-to-drive character.”

When Is the Best Time to Trade in Your Car?

Mechanic shows car owner engine parts

Has that trusty steed of yours started to falter a bit in recent months? Do you find yourself daydreaming about the latest showroom models? For most car owners, a trade-in is pretty much inevitable sooner or later — but timing that move can prove a tricky proposition. Let’s look at some of the factors you should consider:

Trade-in value – Whether your car or truck is falling apart in rush-hour traffic or still performing admirably, the trade-in value of your vehicle will probably make a significant difference in how much car you can buy. According to Forbes, the 2008 recession transformed late-model used cars into particularly hot properties as buyers found themselves with less disposable income to spend on new vehicles. As owners held onto their cars for “just one more year,” a shortage of these vehicles became the new normal for dealerships. So if your car is of recent vintage and in good condition, you can maximize your return by selling sooner rather than later.

Repair costs – Many owners assume that they can do better for themselves by making incremental repair and maintenance costs than by shouldering the expense of a new vehicle. In the short term, this strategy makes sense — but it’s a bitter irony that the longer your hold onto your car, and the lower its trade-in value becomes, the more it will cost you. Edmunds notes that a timing belt package, a typical maintenance requirement for any vehicle not equipped with a timing chain, can cost you up to $1,000. This event usually becomes necessary around 90,000 to 100,000 miles, and it may make you wonder why you’re shelling out so much money on a car that might not trade for much more than that.

Reliability – Some makes of cars are especially known for their reliability, but nothing lasts forever. How confident do you feel about your car’s current level of performance? If you find yourself biting your nails over whether you’ll make it to work the next morning, trading in your car for a newer one (preferably with a full warranty) can provide that great intangible known as peace of mind. The Christian Science Monitor advises you to follow your instincts in this situation. How you feel about your car has value, even if that value can’t be isolated in terms of dollars and cents.

Safety – Did your old car come with all the safety amenities taken for granted on today’s state-of-the-art vehicles? Many older models, for instance, don’t include side airbags or tire pressure monitors, which have now become standard fare on many new cars. Today’s vehicles are safer than ever, so if you’re determined to provide that benefit for yourself and your passengers, do some research to find out what safety devices you might be missing out on.

Every car owner has different needs and priorities, which is why there’s no cookie-cutter “right time” to trade in a vehicle. With these considerations in mind, however, you should find it easier to make the choice that makes the most sense for you.

Your Car Emergency Preparedness Kit: The Key to Surviving Any Summer Roadside Disaster

Man walking away from broken down car with gas can

With summertime approaching, you might hear the open road calling your name. While there are few things in life more fun and exciting than a summer road trip, there are few things as frightening and dangerous as a breakdown that leaves you stranded in the middle of nowhere. Set out on your next outstanding summer adventure with confidence and peace of mind by stocking your vehicle with a thorough, practical, and essential emergency preparedness kit.

Emergency Survival Kits: Why You Need One

From mechanical problems to environmental disasters, there are literally thousands of tragedies that can befall unsuspecting travelers as they journey down the remote highways and byways of the world. Plenty of automotive industry authorities have shared stories of drivers making disastrous wrong turns that often leave them stranded in mud, water, or snow for days if not weeks on end. (These stories featured on Popular Mechanics are particularly chilling.)

While most summer vacationers won’t be contending with snow, the warmest months of the year present their own unique dangers and challenges. (Heatstroke, anyone?) For this reason, the team at HowStuffWorks suggests creating seasonal emergency kits that are carefully tailored to meet your own specific needs.

Building a Summer Car Survival Kit: The Basics

As the weather heats up, you can ditch all the extra antifreeze, heavy blankets, shovels, salt, and sandbags. These heavy and/or cumbersome items will only hold you down as you begin your summery wanderings, and the extra weight that they add will cause your car to burn more gas for no good reason. Keep your fuel costs low and your carbon footprint small by eliminating all unnecessary items from your emergency kit.

One of the most important items in your summer emergency kit is water. Although it is important to carry portable drinking water in your vehicle year round, it is particularly important in the summer months when excessive heat can rapidly bring about the symptoms of dehydration. For those who wish to avoid bulky and perishable plastic water bottles, Popular Mechanics suggests stocking your car with easily storable, emergency drinking water packages such as those from Aqua Blox (which tout a shelf life of five full years).

Other items to include in your summer emergency preparedness kit range from road flares and replacement fuses to an extra pair of prescription glasses and a disposable camera that can be used to document any collisions or roadside accidents. Bankrate suggests traveling with dozens of potentially life-saving items, including:

  • A supply of nonperishable food

Canned food tops

  • A rain poncho
  • A towrope
  • Jumper cables

A set of jumper cables

  • Reflective warning triangles
  • Foam tire sealant
  • Gloves
  • Rags
  • Duct tape

Before departing on a long summer journey, every vehicle should also contain:

  • a first aid kit

First aid kit with supplies removed

  • a fire extinguisher
  • a flashlight
  • a tire air pressure gauge
  • a toolbox that is fully stocked with pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, and other basic tools

Old green toolbox

And don’t forget to bring along the most essential piece of emergency equipment that the modern age has produced: a fully charged cell phone. Although your summer adventure may take you off the technological grid, as long as you can get a few “bars” on your cellular device, help is never more than a phone call away.

Hendrick Honda Services All Makes & Models | Hendrick

Hendrick Honda Offers Service on All Makes and Models

When was the last time you had your oil changed? Tires rotated? You’ve heard it before: regular maintenance is crucial to keep your car in the best condition possible. The better you care for your vehicle, the longer it will last (Even a “lasts forever” Honda needs a little TLC now and then).
Even if you don’t own a Honda or Acura, you can still bring your car in to the factory-trained, ASE-certified mechanics at Hendrick Honda Woodbridge for routine maintenance and service. We service all makes and models and offer great service specials year-round.

Here are a few regular maintenance rules of thumb and how they help extend the life of your car:

Replace Your Air Filter

The air filter every 15,000 miles – more if you’re frequently around dust or dirt roads, less tend to stay away from the highway or don’t come into contact with much dirt. A clog in your air filter can mean decreased gas mileage and even stalling.

Change The Battery

This might seem like a no-brainer, but the battery is one of those things you really, really shouldn’t ignore as far as maintenance goes. A battery that stops on you means you’re stranded.

Change Your Oil

Once upon a time, you changed your oil every 3,000 miles—but today’s engines can go anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 miles before requiring an oil change. Check your owner’s manual for your car’s specific numbers. It’s still a good idea to check your oil every few months to ensure proper oil levels.

Have Your Tires Rotated

Having your tires rotated frequently will greatly increase their lifespan. Generally, you should rotate your tires every 5,000 miles or so. A good rule of thumb: rotate your tires each time you get your oil changed. Generally, you should replace your tires at least every 7 years—unless you want to be driving the way Fred Flintstone does.

Have Your Brakes Checked

If you notice a change in the sound, feel, or response of your brakes, it is time to have them inspected. No worry is too small in this case as even small problems can quickly turn into safety hazards. – Replace Your Windshield Wipers It is a good idea to replace windshield wipers in the fall & spring– after the summer heat and icy winter. These extreme conditions can dry out and damage the rubber on your windshield wipers leaving you without optimum visibility.
Whatever make or model you’re driving, come see us at Hendrick Honda Woodbridge for regular maintenance checks and service. You’ll save time and money by keeping up with vehicle maintenance—and if you come to us, you’ll know you got great service from qualified mechanics.
